SAP invests in n8n, values platform at $5.2 billion

SAP has invested in workflow automation company n8n, valuing it at $5.2 billion, more than double the startup’s valuation from less than a year ago, according to n8n. The deal also includes a technical integration: n8n said it will be embedded natively inside SAP’s Joule Studio.

The announcement marks a major step for n8n, which was founded nearly seven years ago. In a blog post, the company said its platform has grown into a community of 1.7 million monthly active builders, and that enterprise use has accelerated quickly over the past year.

According to n8n, the company now has more than 1,400 enterprise customers, including Fortune 500 teams running mission-critical processes. The startup said the SAP partnership is part of a broader push to bring n8n closer to the systems large companies already use, starting with SAP.

SAP is one of the largest names in enterprise software. n8n said 99 of the world’s 100 largest companies are SAP customers, which makes the partnership especially relevant for organizations already running core business operations on SAP systems.

In its announcement, n8n said enterprises want workflows they can place on mission-critical paths without losing control. The company pointed to requirements such as data sovereignty, sector-specific compliance, and full audit trails and governance over each workflow and each agent decision.

Data sovereignty means keeping control over where data is stored and how it moves. Audit trails are records that show what happened in a workflow, while governance refers to rules and oversight that help organizations manage systems safely and consistently.

The company said those controls matter because many business processes need deterministic behavior, meaning there is only one correct result. Examples include compliance checks, billing, and data updates. Other tasks are non-deterministic, where judgment and context matter more, such as ticket triage, drafting copy, or deciding how to respond to an anomaly.

n8n said its platform is designed to handle both types of work: deterministic logic when the outcome must be exact, and agentic systems when a probabilistic decision is acceptable. The company framed the SAP deal as one of the first moves in bringing n8n closer to enterprise systems, and said more announcements are coming this year.

The company also described the partnership as a bet by two German technology companies on enterprise AI infrastructure. n8n said the deal reflects a broader effort to build platforms that large organizations can trust for production use.
