Notion launches developer platform for AI agents and workflows

Notion is expanding beyond note-taking and collaboration software with a new developer platform designed for AI agents, custom code, and live data connections. In a live-streamed announcement on Wednesday, the company said the platform lets teams build automated multi-step workflows, connect external agents, and pull data from databases through Notion’s workspace.

The move builds on Notion’s Custom Agents, which it launched in February. Those agents were designed to handle repetitive work such as answering frequently asked questions, compiling status updates, and automating workflows. Notion said customers have already built more than one million of them, but the company also said the first version had clear limits.

According to Notion, the earlier agents could not connect to external data or use custom logic. That made it harder for teams to tie Notion into their wider systems without using third-party automation tools or writing their own scripts on infrastructure they controlled.

During the livestream, Notion co-founder and CEO Ivan Zhao acknowledged that history. “It’s true that, historically, Notion hasn’t been the most developer-focused platform,” Zhao said. “But things are changing.”

A key part of that change is Workers, Notion’s cloud-based environment for running custom code. The company said customers can write logic and deploy it to a secure sandbox, which is an isolated environment that keeps code from affecting other systems. Notion said this can be used to sync data into Notion, build custom tools, and trigger work with webhooks, the automated signals that start actions when something happens in another app.

Notion said users do not necessarily need to write the code themselves. The company said a preferred AI coding agent can generate it for them. Workers will use the same credit system as Custom Agents, and Notion is making the feature free through August so developers can test it.

The new platform also adds database sync. Powered by Workers, it can pull data from any database with an API and keep Notion databases current. Notion said that could bring in information from systems such as Salesforce, Zendesk, and Postgres, among others.

Zhao described the idea by saying users can “use your Notion database as a sheer canvas to power both your workflows and your agents.” The platform also supports custom logic for building agent tools when a connection through MCP is not enough. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an emerging standard for linking AI tools to external data and services.

Another addition lets Notion users chat directly with external AI agents, assign them work, and track their progress inside Notion. At launch, the company said supported partner agents include Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Decagon. Notion said it plans to add more.

Teams can also connect internal agents through an External Agent API. Developers will access the platform through the Notion CLI, a command-line tool available on the company’s Business and Enterprise plans.

Notion said the Developer Platform is a shift toward becoming a programmable system rather than just an application. The company is positioning itself as a hub where agents, custom code, and live data can work together across tools and databases.
