OpenAI adds productivity plugins to Codex for nontechnical users
OpenAI released new Codex features aimed at nontechnical users, including six plugins, a Sites tool and expanded Annotations support. The company said Codex now has more than 5 million weekly users, with nondevelopers accounting for about 20% of that base.
OpenAI on today released a set of Codex features designed to make its automation tool more useful for nontechnical users. The update adds six plugins, a new Sites feature and broader support for Annotations, as the company looks to expand Codex beyond software development tasks.
Codex first launched last April as a programming assistant inside the ChatGPT interface. It ran on codex-1, a version of OpenAI’s o3 reasoning model tuned for coding, and the company said it added safeguards to block malware creation and reduce programming errors.
⚡ New to this?
This matters because Codex is no longer aimed only at programmers. OpenAI is adding tools that let nontechnical staff use prompts, screenshots and linked apps to get work done, which shows how AI assistants are moving into everyday business tasks.
A plugin is an add-on that gives a tool access to extra data or apps. Sites is a simple web page maker, while Annotations is a feature for marking up content and asking the system to change it.

If you build self-hosted agents, think about task-specific plugins instead of one general assistant. Split workflows for design, finance, sales and document editing into separate tools with narrow permissions and clear data sources.
If you expose screenshot-to-prototype or document-annotation features, add strong input validation and approval steps before the agent writes files or publishes pages. For analytics use cases, connect only the data providers and BI tools each agent actually needs, and keep the rest of the environment isolated.
The tool gained more traction after OpenAI released a standalone desktop app in February. Since then, the company said Codex’s installed base has grown sixfold to more than 5 million weekly users. OpenAI said nondevelopers now make up about 20% of that base and are one of the fastest-growing user groups.
The new plugin set is meant to automate different business tasks. A plugin, in OpenAI’s setup, combines third-party app integrations, prompts and other resources that extend Codex beyond its default functions.
Two of the plugins focus on design work. One is aimed at building user interfaces for websites and applications faster. OpenAI said users can generate interfaces from prompts or upload a screenshot of an existing app and turn it into an interactive prototype.
The second design plugin is meant to create marketing materials, including e-commerce listings and ads. OpenAI is positioning that tool for teams that need to produce visual assets without writing code.
The next two plugins are aimed at financial professionals. One automates some of the work involved in due diligence projects, while the other helps users evaluate the performance of public companies. For that latter task, Codex uses data from several financial providers, including S&P and PitchBook, according to OpenAI.
The final two plugins are for sales teams and data science work. Both can automate data analysis tasks, including looking for sales signals in customer records. OpenAI said the data science plugin also connects to analytics tools such as Tableau.
OpenAI also added Sites, a feature that lets users create single-page websites that can be shared with colleagues through a URL. The company said those pages can serve different purposes, such as a file-sharing repository for a design team or a demand-prediction dashboard for financial analysts.
Another update expands Annotations, a Codex feature that lets developers highlight part of an application interface, describe the change they want and have Codex make the code edits. OpenAI said the feature now also works with nontechnical assets such as business documents.
Sites is in preview for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise customers. The new plugins are generally available in a limited number of markets. OpenAI said it plans to add more plugins over time for corporate finance, marketing strategy, private equity investing, strategy consulting and legal use cases.
